These are the standards you can expect from Youth Focus North West when we collect, hold or use your personal information when you use our For Planet app and website.

We do this in line with data protection law, including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act (DPA) 2018.

Youth Focus North West is the data controller. We are the main decision-makers and exercise overall control over the purposes and means of the processing of personal data. iOS and Android app

When you download, register, and use the For Planet mobile application, we process specific personal data, account information, and technical device identifiers to deliver your user account, track your environmental progress, and ensure app stability.

The For Planet app will not ask for your personal data, however we will be using Google Analytics to track user data anonymously to improve service delivery.

1. Account & Profile Data

To create your profile and authenticate your access, we collect and process:

• Credentials: Your username and passcode, which are transmitted securely to authenticate your account against our backend database.
• Profile Information: Your chosen cartoon avatar selection and group membership details.
• Account Identifiers: A server-assigned unique user ID and authentication tokens, which maintain your active login session.

2. Activity, Progress & Points Tracking

To provide gamified world-building features, track impact, and display your progress, we record data connected directly to your user ID:

• Quiz results and completion status (pass/fail).
• Action completion records, accumulated forest points, and total trees planted.

3. User-Submitted Content (Youth Project Descriptions)

• When you record a completed youth project, the app allows you to enter a free-text description of the project for verification.
• Important Safety Notice: Because this field accepts open text, please do not enter personal identifying information (such as your full legal name, home address, phone number, or school name) into project description boxes.

4. Local Storage & Device Identifiers

• On-Device Storage: To keep you signed in without requiring you to re-log in every time you open the app, we store your username, auth token, server user ID, avatar selection, and point totals locally on your device (using Android AccountManager).
• Push Notifications: If you grant notification permissions, we collect and update a unique Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) device token on our server to send push notifications directly to your specific device.

5. Analytics & Crash Reporting

We use Google Firebase services to maintain app quality and understand service usage:

• Firebase Analytics: Logs interaction metrics (such as screens viewed, buttons tapped, filters selected, and quiz events) tied to a device-level analytics identifier. This data helps us evaluate and improve app features.
• Firebase Crashlytics: Automatically gathers technical device details (such as device model, operating system version, and stack traces) when an unexpected crash occurs. These diagnostic reports are used solely for bug fixing and are not linked to your user account identity.

The For Planet app will not ask for your real name or contact details. Any data we or Science & Engineering Applications Ltd collect from the use of the app will be used either aggregated or anonymous unless you agree otherwise.

Therefore we promise:

• all user information will be anonymous
• to only ask for what we need, and not to collect too much or irrelevant information
• only share the anonymous tracking data with For planet partners (this may include: The Environment Agency, Science and Engineering Applications Ltd, Lancashire County Council, The Challenge Academy Trust, Ribble River Trust, and The Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside.)
• to protect it and make sure nobody has access to it who shouldn’t
• to make sure we don’t keep it longer than necessary

Website Personal Information

The For Planet website has an email link within the Get Involved page. This feature facilitates the capture of personal information such as your email address. Through the use of this feature you may also provide additional personal information that would aid us in getting more involved with For Planet. Personal information is not captured unless expressly provided by the user.

Therefore we promise:

• all user information will be anonymous

Website Browsing data

We deposit cookies to collect information such as your Internet Protocol (IP) address, country, browser type, referring/exit pages, operating system and date/time of visit.

This not only helps us to provide you with a better experience and improve our website, but also provides us with information about your experience and interests. This information is used to make content and services more relevant and useful during future visits.

Cookies are small text files that are placed and stored on your device by websites that you visit.

Cookies collect information about the number of visitors to our website and how such visitors use it, for example: which pages are visited most often; and any error messages received. These cookies do not collect any personal data and the information that is collected is aggregated and anonymous. Some of these cookies are automatically deleted from your device after two (2) years. Others are “session cookies” which are stored in your device’s temporary memory and are erased after the browser is closed.

Which data we process

When you use the Youth Focus North West For Planet service, we process the following anonymous data:

• Your Internet Protocol (IP) address (processed only, not stored)
• Information about your preferences and interests;
• Web browser type and version;
• Operating system;

We are lawfully allowed to process your anonymous data. We are not processing or storing personal data.

Why we process your data

We process your data to:

• Personalising and tailoring our services to you.
• Analysing your use of our Site and application to gather feedback enabling us to continually improve our For Planet service and your user experience.

How long we retain data

Your anonymised data is kept for the duration of the contract between Youth Focus North West, Environment Agency, Science and Engineering Applications Ltd and partners.

Any data you send is at your own risk

Sending information over the internet is generally not completely secure, and we can’t guarantee the security of your data while it’s in transit.

You have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the right to access your data and the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
